Starry River of the Sky is advertised as a companion book, but it is really a prequel to the earlier book. I didn't realize that this was the case until about a quarter of the way into the book when Rendi, an angry boy forced to be a “chore boy” at a small town inn, tells a story about Magistrate Tiger, who plays a prominent role in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon/5().
Under the Wide and Starry Sky is an historical novel about Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife, Fanny. Its divided into three Parts. I found Part One to be a bit cumbersome/5. In the first book of the series, there’s one narrator for Todd’s POV, but in the second book there are two POVs and two narrators, and in the third there are three POVs and three narrators.
All of the narrators, overall, were very interesting and they really pulled the story together for me. Under the Wide and Starry Sky is at once a classic artistic bildungsroman and a retort to the genre, a novel that shows how love and marriage can simultaneously offer inspiration and encumbrance, especially when the more successful partner believes that, as far as artists go, "a family could tolerate only one."4/4(42).
